The Final Challenge (TFC) is the MUD that Realm of Shadows is heavily inspired by.  Several features that exist in Realm of Shadows, first existed in TFC.  Our God Follower System, Triple Classing and several quests areall based on TFC's.  TFC has been online since 1994 and has many amazing people and features.  While there are numerous overlaps and similarities between the two MUDs, it's always suggested and encouraged to play both!
