Wizards should be required to hold a staff in their off-hand to cast.

The staff, being the source of their magical power, can increase their casting power, or decrease it if  the staff is not of a suitable level.

P. S.

I'm watching The Hobbit. It gave me this idea. Feel free to work off of it.

To replace the current casting system?  It's doable, just need more to go on.  I think the current staves would not work well for this concept though.  There would need to be a new item type (wizard_staff) perhaps that would modify casting level.  One hesitation would be that it could make leveling potentially moot for casting level and also everyone would probably hoarde whichever staff was most powerful.

Agreed. But, currently, staves are pointless. Leveling for a wizard is not going to go out of style. The staves could use the Level flag that items already have.

The staves for a wizard, however, are not necessarily going to cast single spells.

Just spit balling here.

A Wizard's Staff would:
Enhance casting power
Different materials enhance different spell types (wood/blue crystal (electricity) vs wood/red crystal (fire))
Be Level based

As stated, this was just a random thought from watching The Hobbit. Not much thought has gone into it prior to the original post. I was just thinking it could be a cool, and different, feature for the game. Otherwise, Mage and Wizard are different versions of the same thing. Not much differentiates the two other than spells and tiers.
